Uttanapadasana, is also called as ‘Extended Stretch Foot Pose Asana’, is one of the classic pose of Asana. The meaning of ‘ut’ is to lift, ‘tan’ is to stretch and ‘pad’ means leg. This pose involves raising the legs and is used as an exercise to reduce obesity.
This is one of the main practices of Pranayama which is mentioned in the yogic texts Hatha Yoga Pradeepika, Gheranda Samhita, Tirumandiram, Siva Samhita, Puranas and in the Upanishads.
“Kapal” means “forehead” and “bhati” means “to purify”. This pranayama is the purifier of the forehead, hence known as kapalbhati.
